GE Vernova is buying eyes for the grid with its latest Alteia acquisition in the works.

Recently, GE Vernova announced it is acquiring Alteia, a visual intelligence platform that turns drone, satellite, and LiDAR imagery into actionable insights.

Why it matters

Utilities are no longer limited to control room SCADA screens and static asset databases. They can now see the grid in near real time and act.

What this unlocks now

→ Spot vegetation encroachment before it touches a line
→ Catch aging poles, transformers, or streetlights before they fail
→ Monitor asset health conditions like hotspots, corrosion, and leaks
→ Track wildfire risks in dry corridors
→ Speed storm damage assessment and crew dispatch
→ Prevent outages before they cascade

GE says Alteia’s capabilities will plug into #GridOS, their digital grid platform, to give operators visual context on top of ADMS and EMS models.

That means:
⚡ Drone and satellite imagery stitched directly into grid views
⚡ Vegetation and asset health risks identified before they cause outages
⚡ Situational awareness in wildfire zones, storm response, and DER integration

This strengthens the bridge between OT systems and the IT and AI layers that analyze them.

And it goes beyond better pictures. It turns grid management into something visual, predictive, and proactive…giving operators the chance to spot risks early and act before they escalate.

The bigger picture

Moves like this signal that utilities are stepping into an era where visual intelligence and AI-driven insights will be table stakes, not optional. As grids get more complex with DERs, renewables, and climate pressures, the ability to layer real-time imagery on top of system models could redefine how utilities approach resilience.

❓ Are you ready to bring visual intelligence into your operations? Are you still running blind with siloed data and after-the-fact reports? Or are you already using tools to get there?
